Donald Trump would select one of his erstwhile 2024 primary rivals as his running mate if voters had their way.
According to a recent Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released on Monday, the top two candidates for the 77-year-old Trump to select to join the Republican ticket this year are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC).
DeSantis, who disqualified himself from serving as Trump’s second-in-command in February, was selected by 12% of all respondents and 23% of self-identified Republicans.
Scott (9% of all voters, 12% of Republicans), biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy (8%, 13%), and former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (5%, 8%) were the next candidates on the preference list, following the 45-year-old Sunshine Stater.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, and pundit Tucker Carlson were each selected by 4% of voters. However, Carlson was marginally more popular among self-identified Republicans (5%) than Noem (4%) or Rubio (3%).
Trump has hinted that he will disclose his choice of vice president prior to the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee from July 15-18.
