In a significant move to bolster support for Florida’s nearly 1.5 million veterans, Governor Ron DeSantis reportedly signed three bills during a news conference at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Port Charlotte on June 6, 2025.
These legislative measures aim to enhance the welfare of veterans and their families, addressing critical issues such as benefits assistance and nursing home care.
Among the key pieces of legislation is the Veterans’ Benefits Assistance bill, designed to protect veterans from exploitation by unscrupulous consultants.
This law targets individuals who charge veterans for assistance with navigating the often complex benefits process. “This legislation creates strong new protections for veterans by placing clear limits on unaccredited individuals who try to charge a particular price to ‘help’ with VA claims,” DeSantis stated.
The bill mandates that anyone acting on behalf of a veteran must secure a tangible increase in benefits before receiving any payment.
It also prohibits referral kickbacks and misleading guarantees, aiming to eliminate what DeSantis described as a “cottage industry” that preys on vulnerable veterans.
The legislation took effect immediately upon the governor’s signature, marking a proactive step in safeguarding veteran rights.
Another important measure signed by DeSantis is the Veteran and Spouse Nursing Home Beds bill. This legislation allows certain licensed skilled nursing facilities to designate beds specifically for veterans and their spouses, contingent on meeting specific criteria.
Additionally, it authorizes the executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs to approve such designations, streamlining the process for facilities wishing to offer dedicated care.
The third bill, labeled the Veterans bill, expands the responsibilities of the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
It requires the department to assess veterans’ awareness of available programs and services, ensuring that those who have served receive the support they need.
Furthermore, it revises the Veteran Suicide Prevention Training Pilot Program to include specialized mental health training and mandates the development of adult day health care facilities to further assist veterans and their families.
Both the Veterans bill and the Nursing Home Beds bill are set to take effect on July 1.
DeSantis emphasized the importance of these initiatives during the signing ceremony, noting that they reflect Florida’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of its veterans.
For veterans seeking additional information about available benefits and services, the state encourages contacting the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs or visiting FloridaVets.org.
The governor’s actions underscore a broader effort to enhance the quality of life for those who have served in the military, ensuring they receive the respect and care they deserve.
