A gunman who opened fire near the White House on Saturday evening reportedly died at a local hospital after exchanging gunfire with members of the Secret Service, according to reporting from Fox News correspondent Alex Hogan.

The frightening incident unfolded just outside the White House complex while President Donald Trump was inside the Oval Office working on what he described earlier in the day as the “final aspects and details” of a peace agreement aimed at ending the war with Iran.

Hogan reported the suspect fired three shots near the White House before Secret Service agents responded with force. The gunman later died roughly two hours after the shooting began.

A bystander was also struck during the chaos. Authorities had not determined Saturday evening whether the individual was hit by gunfire from the suspect or during the exchange of fire that followed between the shooter and federal agents.

The New York Post later identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best, describing him as a mentally troubled individual who had allegedly become well known to Secret Service personnel because of repeated incidents near White House security checkpoints.

According to the report, Best had previously been ordered by a court to stay away from the White House following an earlier encounter in which he allegedly entered a restricted area and made bizarre statements to police officers, including claiming he was Jesus Christ.

Saturday’s shooting occurred at the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue around 6:00 p.m. local time, triggering an immediate lockdown and massive law enforcement response in the heart of the nation’s capital.

Reuters reported that Best was transported to George Washington Hospital following the shooting. The Associated Press reported both the suspect and the wounded bystander were initially listed in critical condition after being rushed to the hospital.

The violence erupted only hours after Trump posted from the White House that negotiations surrounding the Iran conflict were nearing completion and that a peace agreement would be announced shortly.

The timing added another dramatic moment to an already tense day as Washington remained focused on developments overseas while security concerns suddenly exploded much closer to home.

Journalists stationed near the White House described scenes of panic as gunfire rang out across the area. ABC News correspondent Selina Wang reportedly dove for cover after hearing what sounded like dozens of shots. She and other members of the press corps were quickly rushed into the White House briefing room as Secret Service agents secured the area.

CNN also reported its journalists heard repeated gunfire, prompting an immediate lockdown and rapid emergency response from federal authorities.

DC News Now reporter Chris Flanagan later said journalists remained under lockdown for nearly an hour before being released around 6:51 p.m. local time. He described the law enforcement presence surrounding the White House afterward as “huge.”

Fox News reported earlier Saturday that despite the frightening exchange of gunfire, the suspect never breached the White House gates.

The incident served as another reminder of the intense security pressures surrounding the presidency at a time when global instability and domestic tensions continue colliding in unpredictable ways. Even as officials worked behind closed doors on negotiations meant to cool conflict abroad, violence erupted just steps from the seat of American power.
