In a striking departure from the usual media narrative, longtime liberal commentator and former MSNBC host Chris Matthews reportedly acknowledged what many conservatives have been arguing for months: the political momentum in America is moving toward Donald J. Trump.
In a wide-ranging interview with veteran broadcaster Charlie Rose, Matthews offered a candid assessment of the president’s growing appeal — and questioned the reliability of mainstream polling that continues to show Trump with underwater approval numbers.
“To be honest with you, the country is moving towards Trump!” Matthews said in the Saturday YouTube interview. “These polls, they come out and show him not doing well — I don’t buy that.”
The remark was nothing short of a bombshell coming from Matthews, who for over two decades helmed Hardball on MSNBC, a network often characterized by its relentless criticism of Trump.
Yet in this moment, Matthews dismissed the prevailing wisdom within the Beltway echo chamber, pointing instead to a deeper political current that he believes pollsters are missing.
Recent polls from Gallup and CNN show Trump’s approval rating in the high 30s to low 40s — levels that Democrats have seized on as evidence that the president is floundering.
Gallup most recently pegged Trump’s approval at 37 percent, just shy of his post-January 6 nadir. CNN’s “Poll of Polls” places him at 41 percent, tied for the lowest mark of his second term.
But Matthews, speaking with the freedom of someone no longer bound to corporate talking points, made clear he believes the numbers are misleading.
What matters more, in his view, is the intangible sense of presence and dominance that Trump continues to project — especially when contrasted with today’s Democratic leaders.
“His strength is still greater than the Democratic strength,” Matthews asserted. “He is a stronger public figure than the Democratic people.”
He went on to contrast the Democratic Party’s current image with the charisma of former President Barack Obama, noting that while Obama may still command admiration, Trump brings a different, more potent quality to the table.
“Obama still has tremendous charisma — but Trump has strength. And I think that’s what all voters look for. They want a president who is a strong figure. And he’s got it. It’s just there. And half the country buys it.”
Matthews’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment among even some disillusioned Democrats — that Trump’s raw, unapologetic leadership style continues to resonate with millions of Americans who are tired of weakness, wokeness, and excuses.
While legacy media and liberal pundits continue to write Trump off based on polls and scandals, Matthews is sounding an alarm from within the Democratic camp: charisma and celebrity are not enough.
In a time of geopolitical instability and economic uncertainty, American voters are still drawn to strength — and in Chris Matthews’s view, Trump has it.
It’s a message the Democratic Party may ignore at its peril.
