President Donald Trump reportedly delivered a sharp rebuke to Elon Musk on Sunday, branding Musk’s initiative to form a third political organization — the “America Party” — as a destabilizing “train wreck” and warning that it would unleash “complete and total disruption & chaos” in American politics.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed dismay at Musk’s departure from staunch Republican support.

He described Musk’s recent moves as “off the rails,” and squarely attributed the rift to Musk’s opposition to the recently enacted reconciliation package, which included the rollback of electric vehicle mandates—policies that had incidentally benefited Tesla.

“This was the biggest Bill of its kind in the history of our Country,” Trump wrote, insisting that Republicans remained “a smooth running machine.”

He harbored low expectations for a third party’s success in the established two-party system, asserting that history showed such efforts only sow disorder. Trump also suggested Musk’s motivations were partly self-serving, tied to financial interests.

Musk, whose relationship with Trump once appeared solid, launched the America Party after expressing concerns that the spending bill would inflate the federal deficit by trillions and dismantle the EV mandate.

In announcing the effort, Musk cited an X poll—a platform he owns—claiming overwhelming support for a political alternative to what he called the “Uniparty.”

Though Musk contends that the new party intends to target a handful of Senate and House races, offering a swing vote on key legislation, Trump dismissed the notion as unrealistic and dangerous.

He referenced Musk’s earlier public overture to appoint a friend as NASA administrator—an idea he reversed—implying Musk’s judgment was inconsistent.

Market response to the announcement underscored the volatility of the moment.

Tesla’s stock dropped more than 7 percent in early trading, as investors grappled with the implications of Musk’s intensified political engagement and its potential distraction from business priorities.

Analysts say Trump’s critique exposes deeper tensions within conservative circles.

Some view Musk’s move as principled—a bid to curb partisan gridlock and fiscal recklessness—while others fear it could fracture the Republican base ahead of pivotal elections.

Whether the America Party becomes a disruptive force or a fleeting spectacle will hinge on Musk’s ability to build infrastructure, field candidates, and navigate the steep barriers third parties face in U.S. elections.

Trump’s warning taps into longstanding skepticism: only a few third-party efforts, like Ross Perot’s Reform Party, have gained momentary traction — none have produced lasting impact.

For now, the showdown illustrates how quickly alliances can unravel in politics when personal ambition, ideology, and business influence collide — and how an off-hand tweet can recalibrate the landscape.
