Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is reportedly advocating for Dr. Joseph Ladapo, the state’s Surgeon General, to be appointed as the next director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

DeSantis believes that Ladapo could make a more significant impact for Florida in this role than he currently does as Surgeon General.

In a post on social media platform X, DeSantis stated, “Overhauling the CDC would be beneficial to FL. Joe could do more for FL as CDC Director than as FL Surgeon General.”

The governor echoed the sentiments of supporters who have described Ladapo as a transformative candidate for the CDC, one who possesses the courage and determination necessary to enact positive changes in public health policy.

DeSantis emphasized that Ladapo’s potential appointment aligns with his vision of “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA), suggesting that this slogan would take on real meaning under Ladapo’s leadership.

This push comes in the wake of President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the nomination of Dr. Dave Weldon for the CDC director position earlier this month.

Weldon stated that he was informed twelve hours before his Senate confirmation hearing that his nomination was being withdrawn due to insufficient votes for confirmation.

DeSantis previously proposed Ladapo for the position of Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services before Trump appointed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for that role.

This latest endorsement highlights DeSantis’s ongoing support for Ladapo and his commitment to reshaping health governance at the national level.

As public health challenges continue to arise, the governor’s call for Ladapo reflects a desire for change in the CDC’s leadership and direction.
