Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has reportedly ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Thursday, March 13, in honor of the late State Senator Geraldine Thompson.
This directive comes in recognition of Thompson’s contributions as a dedicated public servant, who represented Orange County in the Florida Legislature for nearly 20 years.
Thompson, a Democrat, passed away at the age of 76 last month after successfully winning her seat back in the recent general election.
Her family expressed their sorrow in a statement, highlighting her roles as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
They noted that her love, wisdom, and compassion significantly impacted not only her family but also the broader community and state.
Throughout her legislative career, Thompson was an advocate for public education and public health.
Notably, after a tragic incident in 2022 where a tourist died on an amusement park ride, she worked diligently to pass legislation aimed at improving safety standards for such attractions.
Despite their political differences, Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of honoring Thompson’s legacy.
“To honor Senator Geraldine Thompson, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida and all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout Orange County from sunrise to sunset on Thursday,” the order issued by the Governor read.
