As part of a continuing staff purge that has also affected other federal agencies and departments, the Trump administration has now reportedly forced the termination of 405 workers employed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
According to a source familiar with the matter, the majority of the layoffs took place at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is the agency responsible for disaster relief in the country.
On Friday, 200 workers were laid off from their positions at the agency, while more than 130 employees were let go from their positions at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
A minimum of fifty employees were laid off at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, while the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate experienced a decrease of ten personnel, according to the source.
An additional twelve Coast Guard personnel who were headquartered in Washington and who were working on diversity, equity, and inclusion projects were placed on administrative leave.
Through an offer to support the border security activities at the southwestern frontier of the United States, they were impacted by the reduction in force implemented by the United States.
Thousands of workers who had been on the job for a year or two were fired this past week as part of the federal workforce purge that was approved by President Trump and, in part, orchestrated by Elon Musk, the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency.
These workers were terminated while they were still on their probationary period.
Approximately 2,300 people were let go by the Department of the Interior. Approximately one thousand employees were let go from the Department of Veterans Affairs, while nearly four hundred employees were let go from the Environmental Protection Agency.
Large organizations under the Department of Homeland Security, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, did not appear to be impacted by the cuts that taken place on Friday.
During Trump’s second term, both of these issues are of the utmost importance in his efforts to crack down on illegal immigration and reduce the number of people crossing the southern border illegally.
