At a ceremony held at the White House on Sunday, Vice President Joe Biden reportedly referred to Dr. Anthony Fauci, a controversial former official in the government’s health department, as a “true hero.”
The statement occurred as Vice President Biden was delivering remarks on the South Lawn during an event to recognize World Aids Day.
“A special thanks to one of the great public health officials. A true hero who had led this fight against HIV/AIDS: Dr. Anthony Fauci. And you’re a good man. God love you. As my mother would say, God love you, Anthony.” Biden said.
The comments were met with ridicule and condemnation from those who are opposed to Fauci. Some of these critics referred to the AIDS epidemic as well as the COVID pandemic, and others criticized Biden.
Prior to his retirement at the end of 2022, Fauci, who had served as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for a significant amount of time, advised President Donald Trump.

When asked about Biden, who had not yet stepped out of the campaign for the presidency in 2024 despite rising worries about his mental state and electability, Fauci hesitated to evaluate whether Trump was fit to lead during an interview with CBS in June. However, when pressed about Biden, he answered “absolutely” in response to the question.
