After former Florida representative Matt Gaetz (R) announced that he is withdrawing his name from consideration for attorney general in the next administration, reporters were reportedly getting busy asking senators whether Florida governor Ron DeSantis would possibly consider appointing the controversial Republican to the seat held by Senator Marco Rubio, who is Trump’s nominee for secretary of state.

An individual who is familiar with the governor’s thinking has stated unequivocally that Gaetz is not included on the list of contenders.

Given the cloud of controversy that surrounds Gaetz and the extensive list of Republican candidates that DeSantis is already vetting for the seat, this news should not come as a surprise to anyone.

Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of the president-elect, is among the most prominent candidates for the position.

Other promising prospects include Ashley Moody, the attorney general of Florida, Jeanette Nuñez, the lieutenant governor of Florida, and James Uthmeier, the chief of staff for DeSantis.

In a statement that was posted on social media earlier this week, the governor stated that he anticipates making his selection somewhere in the beginning of January.

In the year 2022, Rubio was reelected for his Senate post before he was tapped to be Secretary of State after Trump’s massive electoral victory. Assuming that he is confirmed for the cabinet position, this indicates that whoever succeeds him will serve until the year 2026 before having to stand for re-election.
