Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) has joined the Puerto Rico Status Act as its 100th supporter.

This legislation would permit a federally organized vote, enabling Puerto Ricans to decide on their political future—be it independence, statehood, or sovereign free association with the U.S.

A nonbinding referendum on Puerto Rico’s status will be held on the island on November 5.

Mills’ commitment to the legislation comes amid heightened political tensions, following comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s controversial remark at

Trump’s Masdison Square Garden rally on Sunday, where he referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”

Despite this, Mills’ office stated his endorsement was in progress before the controversy.

“I am honored to support the Puerto Rico Status Act as the 100th co-sponsor of HR 2757, which upholds the right of U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico to participate in a self-determination process,” Mills told The Hill.

“This legislation is a significant step forward, authorizing a federally sponsored plebiscite that gives Puerto Ricans the choice between independence, sovereignty in free association with the United States, or statehood.”

“There has been a strong historic bond between Puerto Rico and the United States. The bottom line is that Puerto Ricans serve in the U.S. military, they deserve at least the option of statehood,” he added.

Mills represents the 15th House Republican, out of 118th Congress, to support this bill.

Recently, Mills was able to secure over $45 million from federal agencies and bureaus who held benefits from Florida’s 7th Congressional District constituents.

“After the destruction caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, we understand that many families are in need of assistance. Navigating FEMA’s processes can be overwhelming, especially when recovering from the impact of hurricanes,” Mills said in a statement.

“My team is dedicated to ensuring that constituents have access to the federal disaster relief they need. If you or someone you know is struggling to receive assistance from FEMA or any other federal agency due to delays, paperwork issues, or other barriers, my office is here to assist in finding solutions.”
