Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is reportedly now mobilizing 250 law enforcement officers and deploying an air-and-sea fleet to Florida’s southern waters in order to address the situation involving potential Haitian immigrants.
Haiti has descended into a state of turmoil and unrest, as criminal organizations have taken control of the majority of the capital and significant portions of the countryside.
This dire situation has resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of individuals from their residences.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Ariel Henry made the decision to step down, allowing for a transitional government to take over. Additionally, non-essential embassy personnel from the US and other countries have been evacuated.
Although the US Coast Guard recently repatriated approximately 65 Haitians found near the Bahamas, there is not yet any large-scale migration to Florida, which is about 700 miles (1,100 kilometers) away from Haiti.
However, conditions continue to worsen on the gang ravaged island.
The governor announced plans to deploy a significant number of Florida State Guardsmen to the Florida Keys, along with additional support from various state agencies including the National Guard, department of law enforcement, highway patrol, and fish and wildlife conservation commission.
Florida has experienced a rise in the influx of migrants from Caribbean nations arriving by boat, including Cuba and Haiti.
In January 2023, over three days, approximately 500 Cuban migrants made their way to the small islands of the Florida Keys.
DeSantis, has expressed strong opposition to immigration at the southern border in the past and has made significant moves to keep Americans safe from migrant violence.
