Purple Heart recipient Teddy Daniels is publicly rebuking presumptive Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner after years-old online comments resurfaced in which Platner mocked Daniels for injuries he sustained during a firefight with the Taliban.
The controversy centers on a 2019 Reddit comment attributed to Platner that was recently highlighted by Fox News Digital. The comment was posted in response to a video showing Daniels engaged in combat during a 2012 encounter with Taliban forces, an incident in which Daniels suffered multiple wounds and later received a Purple Heart.
Reacting to the footage at the time, Platner wrote a harsh critique of Daniels’ actions during the firefight, ridiculing both his conduct and survival. Platner argued that only poor Taliban marksmanship prevented Daniels from being killed and claimed that future infantrymen would view the video with contempt.
The resurfaced remarks have generated sharp criticism from Daniels, who described the comments as far beyond the boundaries of ordinary political or personal criticism.
“The stuff that this guy put out there publicly is beyond locker room talk,” Daniels told Fox News. “It is just vile and disgusting.”
Daniels expanded on those criticisms in a new opinion piece published in The Wall Street Journal, where he used the controversy to question both Platner’s character and his political image.
According to Daniels, Platner presents himself as a champion of working-class Americans while possessing a background that Daniels argues tells a different story.
“Democratic men are having an identity crisis,” Daniels wrote. “Maine’s Graham Platner, the party’s presumptive nominee for U.S. Senate, is a prime example.”
Daniels contrasted Platner’s public image with what he described as a privileged upbringing. While noting that Platner often appears in clothing associated with blue-collar culture, Daniels argued that the candidate comes from a prominent family and benefited from elite educational opportunities and an affluent lifestyle.
The veteran also accused Platner of displaying a pattern of disrespect toward military service members. Daniels wrote that Platner had previously made disparaging remarks about fellow veterans, including Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and Vice President JD Vance.
Daniels reserved particular criticism for Platner’s remarks regarding the firefight in Afghanistan, emphasizing that the incident was not an internet debate but a real combat engagement in which he suffered serious injuries.
“I received a Purple Heart for my injuries,” Daniels wrote, “but Mr. Platner cheered for my death from behind a keyboard.”
The dispute highlights the lingering sensitivities surrounding America’s wars abroad and the experiences of veterans who served in them. While Daniels’ criticism focused on Platner’s rhetoric rather than the broader conflict itself, the episode underscores how the sacrifices and consequences of combat continue to resonate long after the fighting ends.
In the conclusion of his essay, Daniels delivered some of his sharpest criticism. He compared Platner to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, accused him of elitism despite his populist image, and argued that he looks down on rural and working-class Americans.
Daniels wrote that he was less concerned about the personal insult directed at him than what he viewed as the insight it provided into Platner’s character.
“I couldn’t care less about the comments he made about me,” Daniels concluded. “But they are a reflection of his character.”
The controversy remains unresolved. According to the article, Platner has declined to apologize for his remarks regarding Daniels and his military service, leaving the dispute to continue as scrutiny of the Senate candidate intensifies.
