In a significant turn of events, former U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, a prominent figure in New Jersey politics, is reportedly now set to report to a federal prison on Tuesday to begin serving an 11-year sentence for his involvement in a high-profile bribery and corruption scheme.
The Democratic senator, who was once a powerful voice in the Senate, was convicted last July on multiple counts, including bribery, conspiracy, and extortion.
Despite maintaining his innocence throughout the legal proceedings, Menendez was found guilty on all 16 counts related to accepting bribes in the form of gold bars, cash, and luxury items from three New Jersey businessmen.
Prosecutors argued that these illicit gifts were exchanged for political favors that benefited both the businessmen and foreign governments, specifically Egypt and Qatar.
As he prepares for incarceration, Menendez, 71, spent his final day of freedom with his wife, Nadine, who was also implicated in the corruption scandal and is awaiting sentencing.
The couple was seen together in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, engaging in routine errands.
Menendez’s legal team has indicated that he will likely be housed at the Federal Correctional Institution in Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, which includes both medium- and minimum-security facilities.
Given the nature of his crimes, it is anticipated that he will serve time in the minimum-security camp, which is known for housing non-violent offenders.
Last week, a federal appeals court denied Menendez’s last attempt to remain free on bail while he sought to overturn his conviction.
During his sentencing in January, Menendez expressed remorse for his actions but also portrayed himself as a victim of a corrupted political system, echoing sentiments often voiced by President Donald Trump regarding perceived injustices within the justice system.
