Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is reportedly now under fire from within his own party after a tumultuous week marked by his support for a Republican-backed continuing resolution aimed at funding the government.
Many Democrats are expressing frustration with Schumer, leading to discussions about potential challengers, including a possible primary run by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2028.
A senior House Democrat candidly remarked that Schumer’s popularity is currently “hovering somewhere between Elon Musk and the Ebola virus,” highlighting the dissatisfaction among party members.
This dissatisfaction appears to extend beyond the usual progressive factions, indicating a broader discontent with Schumer’s recent decisions.
Reports suggest that Schumer is facing backlash not only from his colleagues but also from grassroots liberal groups, leading to the postponement of events on his book tour due to planned protests organized by groups like the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.
His vote for the continuing resolution triggered sharp criticism, including a statement from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who urged Senate Democrats not to follow his lead.
Pelosi argued that the options presented by Trump and Musk—a choice between a government shutdown and a “blank check”—were unacceptable and detrimental to the well-being of working families.
She emphasized the importance of resisting such false choices and commended her colleagues who voted against the bill.
Pelosi further commented on Schumer’s situation, implying that he made a serious misstep, stating, “I myself don’t give away anything for nothing. I think that’s what happened the other day.”
This ongoing tension within the Democratic Party showcases significant divisions and dissatisfaction with leadership.
