During an overseas visit commemorating the 80th anniversary of  World War II, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) was hospitalized and underwent hip replacement surgery for injuries sustained in a fall.

The injury was sustained by Pelosi, who was 84 years old, while traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation in Luxembourg, according to her spokesman Ian Krager on Friday.

Krager stated that Pelosi would be unable to attend the remaining events that were scheduled to commemorate American veterans who participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

According to an individual who was acquainted with the incident, she tripped and collapsed following a group photo with other lawmakers and officials.

Pelosi was included in a group photo that was posted by the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg on Friday morning.

Pelosi was alert and could walk with assistance, according to an individual who was not involved in the incident.

After the Democrats’ loss of the House majority in the 2022 elections, Pelosi resigned from her position as party leader.

She first made history as the first woman to be appointed speaker and was instrumental in the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the opposition to then-President Donald Trump during his first term, and the response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

She was succeeded as party leader by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.), who will remain at the helm of the party in the upcoming Congress.

Pelosi has maintained her position in the House and was recently re-elected to a second two-year term.
