Late on Friday, Governor Ron DeSantis has now made the announcement that state offices will be closed on Wednesday for Thanksgiving.
This will provide state employees with an opportunity to get a jump start on the holiday celebration.
In addition to the national holiday that was observed on Thursday, offices were already slated to be closed on Friday.
This is the first time in recent history that a governor has extended the Thanksgiving Day weekend to state employees in order to express gratitude for their hard work.
It is customary for Thanksgiving to be the weekend with the highest number of travelers of the entire year.
According to projections provided by AAA, 71.7 million people will be away from their homes for Thanksgiving and traveling more than 50 miles.
According to a representative for the Florida Department of Management Services, the additional day off awarded to roughly 100,000 state employees will be in the form of administrative leave.
Since he took office, DeSantis has been quite generous with time off for state employees, frequently awarding extended time off around holidays.
Earlier this year, he implemented a four-day weekend for the Fourth of July celebration by closing state offices on Friday, July 5.
This was done in order to accommodate the holiday.
Additionally, throughout each of the five years that DeSantis has been in office, he has extended paid time off for state employees during the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s.
In addition, state offices were closed for an additional three days in order to accommodate the two holidays in the most recent year.
In each instance, DeSantis expressed gratitude to state employees for their arduous efforts throughout the year to provide assistance and support to families in Florida.
