The state of Florida will now reportedly undertake its own investigation into the apparent assassination attempt against former President Trump at his golf club in West Palm Beach on Sunday, according to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R).
“The State of Florida will be conducting its own investigation regarding the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club. The people deserve the truth about the would be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee.” DeSantis wrote on his social media account on Sunday.
Authorities informed the media that Secret Service agents stationed at a nearby hole observed a man with a rifle propel the firearm’s muzzle through the course’s perimeter while Trump was playing golf in West Palm Beach.
The man dropped the AK-47-style rifle and escaped in a car after being fired at by a Secret Service agent. Around 1:30 p.m., the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Secret Service officials, which prompted the authorities to promptly seal off the area, according to county Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.
Bradshaw stated that the man was apprehended at the site after authorities were able to locate him while he was traveling from Palm Beach County to Martin County on I-95.
A witness had captured a photograph of the individual’s vehicle.
He also stated that the suspect was observed in the vicinity of the shrubbery, where he was found to possess an AK-47-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks, and a GoPro.
Following the incident, the Trump campaign and authorities promptly declared that the former president was “safe.”
Despite the fact that the suspect has not been publicly identified by authorities, Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old Caucasian male with connections to Hawaii and North Carolina, has been identified by numerous media outlets.
Routh was convicted of possessing a weapon of mass destruction in 2002, as well as with a slew of other charges.
