Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis advised Iowa’s delegation to the Republican National Convention to expect Democrats to push President Joe Biden aside and choose a new presidential candidate before the November election.

“I hope and pray that they don’t take that nomination away from him. We want him to be the Democratic nominee. And I will be rooting for him.” DeSantis said.

DeSantis claimed Biden’s weak debate performance in late June demonstrated he is unfit for president.

He told Iowa Republicans that “the knives are out” against Biden among Democrats.

Earlier Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., became the most prominent Democratic lawmaker to publicly urge Biden to step down.

The Florida governor, who extensively campaigned in Iowa ahead of the 2024 Republican caucuses, addressed the delegation on the third day of the national convention, giving a well-received primetime convention speech Tuesday night.

The Iowa delegation had lunch Wednesday on a patio overlooking sailboats on Lake Michigan at the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum, just outside of downtown Milwaukee.

The early talk about the 2028 presidential cycle hung over the group, which was also visited by 2024 presidential contender Vivek Ramaswamy and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt of Texas on Tuesday.

Iowa Republicans anticipate to hold their traditional first-in-the-nation caucuses to kick off the 2028 presidential nomination contest.

And their delegation functions have traditionally been widely attended by persons with future presidential ambitions.
