Governor Ron DeSantis,  accompanied by veterans who participated in the Bay of Pigs invasion, officially approved a new legislation on Wednesday that will introduce the teaching of the history of communism in schools, starting from kindergarten.

DeSantis addressed the audience in Hialeah Gardens, where he officially approved SB 1264, a measure that permits schools to educate students about ‘the perils and malevolence of Communism.’

Starting from the academic year 2026-2027, the measure mandates the inclusion of lessons on the history of communism in Florida’s public schools.

As stated in the bill’s text, the teachings will be tailored to be suitable for the specific age and stage of development of each individual.

The governor, positioned behind a sign displaying the words ‘anti-communism education,’ promoted the mandatory teachings outlined in SB 1264.

The proposal (SB 1264) was enacted by state lawmakers with a strong majority during the 2024 legislative session, which concluded last month.

Commencing in the academic year 2026-27, public schools will be mandated to include teachings on the historical aspects of communism, including their brutal history of crimes against humanity and repression, as part of their compulsory curriculum, as outlined in the proposed legislation.

The courses would cover a range of subjects pertaining to communism, such as the ‘chronicles of communism in the United States and domestic communist movements’ and ‘their histories and strategies.’

State Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. confirmed that the lessons would be distributed evenly among all grade levels.

The responsibility of developing academic standards for the classes will be assigned to the state education department.

DeSantis endorsed the bill on the 63rd commemoration of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and was accompanied by individuals who participated in the invasion with the aim of toppling the Fidel Castro regime.
