Now that he is formally challenging Donald Trump for the nomination in 2024, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is reportedly stepping up his criticism of the former president and accusing him in a new interview of reneging on right-wing beliefs.
In a cutting-edge and innovative Twitter broadcast with CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday, DeSantis made his much anticipated run for the Republican nomination official.
Over the past six months, Trump has constantly attacked the governor of Florida, but DeSantis has mainly refrained from responding.
On Thursday, he specifically targeted Trump’s reputation as a conservative on a variety of hot-button issues.
“It seems like he’s running to the left, and I have always been somebody that’s just been moored in conservative principles,” DeSantis said during an interview with radio host Matt Murphy.
“These will be interesting debates to have, but I can tell you, you don’t win nationally by moving to the left. You win nationally by standing for bold policy. We showed that in Florida. I never watered down anything I did.” He continued.
“I don’t know what happened to Donald Trump. This is a different guy today than when he was running in 2015 and 2016, and I think the direction that he’s going with his campaign is the wrong direction.” DeSantis concluded.
