Left-wing streamer Hasan Piker is suing CNN contributor and conservative radio host Scott Jennings for $72.5 million, accusing him of airing a doctored video to falsely portray Piker as advocating the lynching of Black Americans.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, brings claims of defamation, defamation by implication and false light. Piker is seeking $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages.

The complaint centers on the Aug. 11 episode of “The Scott Jennings Show,” a Salem Media radio program and podcast. During the broadcast, Jennings addressed Black listeners directly before playing a 42-second clip from a Piker livestream in October 2024. He then warned that Democratic campaigns adopting what he called the “Piker plan” could return the country to lynchings, and said Piker was calling for Black voters to be lynched.

Jennings shared the segment on X, where it had racked up roughly 2.7 million views.

Piker argues the clip was stripped of context. According to the lawsuit, the original stream showed Piker reacting to a debate between two Black political commentators and sarcastically mocking a conservative’s arguments about criminal justice. The complaint says the version Jennings aired cut out Piker’s opening words, “He said,” along with other context that made the sarcasm clear.

The lawsuit claims Jennings did more than mischaracterize the remarks, alleging he added a quotation Piker never said and made accusations that went beyond what even the edited footage showed.

Piker’s attorneys sent Jennings a formal retraction demand in August, which the lawsuit says was ignored. The content remains publicly available. The complaint also cites an Aug. 14 Snopes fact-check that found the video had been heavily edited. After the episode aired, Piker posted the full footage online in a video titled “I THINK IT’S TIME TO SUE.”

Jennings did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Piker faces a steep legal climb. As a public figure, he must prove Jennings acted with actual malice, meaning he knew the statements were false or showed reckless disregard for the truth. He must also show the remarks were provably false statements of fact rather than opinion.

Piker, one of the most popular political streamers on Twitch, is no stranger to controversy. He has been suspended from the platform multiple times over inflammatory remarks and has drawn criticism from conservatives for years. He has recently become a flashpoint in Michigan’s Senate race after campaigning with Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.

Jennings, a former special assistant to President George W. Bush, has become one of the most prominent conservative voices on cable news through his regular appearances on CNN, where he frequently spars with left-leaning panelists.

The case is Piker v. Jennings.
