Conservative commentator Dave Rubin warned that President Donald Trump’s ability to advance his agenda could be dramatically curtailed if Republicans lose control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections, arguing that the administration may have only a short window to accomplish its priorities.
Speaking during a teaser clip for Sean Hannity’s Hang Out podcast, which was posted Saturday, Rubin said many Americans underestimate the stakes of the midterms and the impact a Democratic victory could have on Trump’s presidency.
“People really better understand that it’s not that Trump has two-and-a-half-years left,” Rubin said. “He may only have three months left. That in essence is where we could be.”
Hannity agreed with Rubin’s assessment, calling it a “good point,” before discussing what could happen if Republicans were to lose control of the House and Senate.
“If the Republicans lose the House and lose the Senate — well, first, if they lose the House, he’s going to get hung up in impeachment,” Rubin said. He added that while he believed impeachment would likely occur, he did not expect Trump to be removed from office because he did not believe there would be enough votes in the Senate.
Hannity interrupted Rubin to offer his own prediction.
“Oh, he’ll be impeached,” Hannity declared.
Rubin responded by clarifying that he agreed impeachment would happen but maintained that removal from office was unlikely. He argued that the impeachment process itself would become a major obstacle for the administration and would mark the beginning of what he described as an effort to bring an end to the political movement that has defined Trump’s rise.
“The process to end these last 10 years of MAGA and everything that has happened since 2015 will begin,” Rubin said.
According to Rubin, a Democratic victory would have political consequences extending beyond impeachment proceedings. He argued that those on the political left would become more confident and energized if Republicans lost Congress.
“And then it’s not just that they will be emboldened, the crazies on the left will be emboldened,” Rubin said.
Rubin also predicted that divisions among conservatives would intensify under such a scenario. He suggested internal disagreements on the right would escalate rapidly as political figures attempted to distance themselves from Trump and position themselves for the future.
“Then the fighting on the right, to whatever extent we’ve already talked about it, that’s going to go completely bananas because it’s going to be like rats jumping from a ship,” Rubin said. “And then you’re going to have all these people leaving Trump and trying to pick up the pieces. It’s going to be complete chaos.”
Rubin concluded by emphasizing what he believes is the significance of the upcoming elections, arguing that the outcome could shape the remainder of Trump’s presidency more than many realize.
“So, people really better understand that,” he said. “It’s not just that at this midterm, which everyone always says is the most important election of all time. Like, I don’t see how it could possibly be more important than it is right now.”
He closed with a warning about the potential consequences of a Democratic victory, saying, “We are on the edge of handing the keys to the castle to people who are telling us they want to burn the castle down. And we’re about to hand them the keys to do it.”
