Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has now reportedly signed two bills aimed at renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, following a directive from President Donald Trump.

The legislation, which was passed by the Republican-controlled Senate and House, is designed to update various state laws to reflect this name change.

One of the bills, HB 575, modifies numerous state statutes to incorporate the new name, while the other, HB 549, mandates that state agencies revise their geographic materials accordingly.

Additionally, it requires that educational materials adopted or purchased after July 1 include the designation “Gulf of America.”

Senator Nick DiCeglie, who sponsored one of the bills, expressed pride in Florida’s decision to lead the nation in recognizing the Gulf of America.

He stated, “American exceptionalism isn’t an abstract idea; it is an absolute fact that we must recognize and celebrate. In Florida, we will always put America first.”

The move to rename the Gulf has generated mixed reactions, with supporters emphasizing the importance of promoting American identity, while critics question the necessity of the change.

Regardless, the swift passage of the bills reflects the state’s commitment to aligning with the previous administration’s vision.

The legislation highlights ongoing efforts in Florida to assert a distinct identity and prioritize state initiatives that resonate with conservative values.

As the changes take effect, state agencies will begin the process of updating maps, educational materials, and other relevant documents to ensure the new name is widely recognized.

This name change is part of a broader trend in Florida under DeSantis, focusing on initiatives that emphasize American pride and identity, signaling a shift in how the state’s geographical landmarks are referenced.
