The forthcoming Trump administration reportedly intends to execute a significant immigration raid in Chicago next week, as reported by four individuals knowledgeable about the preparations, marking the initial action in President-elect Donald Trump’s anticipated mass deportation initiative.
The raid is anticipated to commence on Tuesday morning, the day following Trump’s inauguration, and would last throughout the week, according to sources.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will deploy between 100 and 200 personnel to execute the operation.
Trump campaigned for the presidency with a daring pledge: to execute the most extensive mass deportation in U.S. history.
The Trump administration plans to focus on immigrants residing in the country unlawfully who possess criminal records—many of which, such as traffic infractions, were deemed too trivial for the Biden administration to address.
However, the individuals warned that if any other undocumented persons are present during an arrest, they will also be apprehended.
The transition team was deliberating on towns to target in a day-one operation to exemplify so-called sanctuary cities that implement regulations restricting collaboration with federal immigration officials.
They chose Chicago because of the substantial immigrant population that may serve as potential targets and the Trump team’s prominent conflict with the city’s Democratic Mayor, Brandon Johnson.
While the exact number of individuals targeted by the operation remains uncertain, Trump’s team intends to collaborate with various conservative media outlets to enhance its initiatives.
Major immigrant hubs, including New York, Los Angeles, Denver, and Miami, are also under the scrutiny of the Trump government, and additional targeted raids may occur.
The Trump administration is considering a comprehensive array of modifications to enhance sheriffs’ authority, including incentives for cooperative jurisdictions and financial sanctions for non-compliant ones, according to individuals engaged in the planning.
Homan has publicly threatened to incarcerate the mayor of Denver, who has vocally opposed Trump’s immigration policies.
