Despite Donald Trump’s felony convictions, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has reportedly pledged to ensure that he is able to vote in his home state this November.
DeSantis stated on Friday that he disagrees with the opinion of certain experts who allege that Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts would render him ineligible to vote in the state.
However, the Florida governor declared that he would guarantee that the state clemency board cleared the way for his erstwhile rival for the Republican presidential nomination to vote in his home state.
On Thursday, Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony offenses for his role in the falsification of business records to conceal a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.
The six-week trial was concluded with a unanimous verdict from a 12-member jury.
His sentencing is scheduled for July 11, and it is anticipated that he will file an appeal.
Trump was convicted in New York but currently resides in Florida, which is one of the Republican-led states that has tightened the voting requirements for individuals who have been convicted of severe crimes.
The Republican-controlled Legislature undermined the state constitutional amendment that Florida voters approved in 2018 to restore voting rights to felons by imposing a complex set of requirements that required convicted felons to first pay all fines, fees, and judicial costs.
Since 2021, New York has permitted individuals with felony convictions to vote upon their release from incarceration.
