Florida Governor Ron DeSantis approved a series of laws on Wednesday morning, with the goal of safeguarding children in the state.
The governor was accompanied by a group of individuals for the signing of the bills at a restaurant in St. Pete.
SB 1224, one of the measures, was motivated by the tragic case of Gabby Petito, who was murdered by her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, in 2021.
The parents have alleged that the officers involved in a domestic violence incident failed to address their daughter’s injuries and should have intervened.
DeSantis stated that a component of the measure would establish an evaluation for law enforcement personnel who attend to a domestic violence event.
This evaluation would aim to determine if the domestic violence victim is at an elevated risk of experiencing death or severe harm.
The governor enacted a law last year that permits the use of capital punishment for individuals who engage in sexual offenses against children under the age of 12.
DeSantis recently conducted a bill signing event at a Walgreens in Stuart, where he enacted legislation that enhances the penalties for retail theft and porch piracy.
