During a recent stop on his book tour on Long Island, New York, on Saturday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reportedly voiced his condemnation of the indictment of former President Donald Trump handed out by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, decrying it as politically motivated and ‘flimsy.’
During a speech that he gave at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Nassau County, DeSantis praised former U.S. Congressman and current Republican candidate for governor of New York, Lee Zeldin, for becoming a vocal critic of the Democratic Manhattan district attorney while on the campaign trail in 2022 in the midst of a rising crime rate in the Empire State.
“This guy is all about politics. He comes in, his whole thing is he doesn’t want people to be in jail. He wants to downgrade felonies to misdemeanors. Really, really dangerous stuff. And then what does he do? He turns around, does a flimsy indictment against a former President of the United States based on a bunch of things that they’re saying business records, which, first of all, even if that’s true, that’s a misdemeanor.” DeSantis said.
DeSantis did not mention Bragg by name, but he did applaud Zeldin’s actions.
It is anticipated that Trump will be arraigned in New York City on Tuesday.
The former president is currently the leading contender for the nomination of Republican presidential candidate in 2024, alongside governor DeSantis.
The specifics of the indictment have not been made public since, per usual procedure, they are kept confidential until after the arraignment has taken place.
It is anticipated that the charges would be related to the alleged hush money incident that occurred in 2016 involving Trump, which the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has been investigating for the past five years.
If the allegations relate to the hush money scandal, the prosecutors are likely to argue that the sum of $130,000 given to Stormy Daniels were improper donations to the Trump campaign that helped his candidacy during the 2016 election.
