Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, was ordered by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to be expelled from Congress and deported on Tuesday in light of her recent controversial statements.
This week, footage surfaced of Representative Omar addressing Somali-Americans in Minneapolis while stating, “I am Somalian first and a Muslim second.” The video prompted backlash against her.
“We, as Somalians, love each other. There are areas of friction that led us to kill each other, but in reality, we are an organized society – brothers and sisters, people of the same blood, people who know they are Somalians first and Muslim second who protect one another and come to each other’s aid and to the aid of other Muslims too.” Omar said.
Rep. Omar also stated, as the subtitles indicate, that the United States must comply with the “orders” of Somali-Americans.
“The U.S. government will only do what Somalians in the U.S. tell them to do. They will do what we want and nothing else. We Somalians must have that confidence in ourselves that we call the shots in the U.S. We live in the U.S., pay taxes in the U.S. and have a real voice.” she said.
As long as she remains in office, Rep. Omar vowed, Somalia will never be in peril, and the United States would “not dare” to support an adversary of her native country.
“Expel from Congress, denaturalize and deport!” wrote in response to the video in a post on the X platform.
