In a recent episode of his podcast, Democratic strategist James Carville reportedly expressed strong disapproval of former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg for his retrospective comments regarding former president Joe Biden’s decision to run for reelection.
Carville’s remarks reflect growing frustration among some Democrats about the party’s leadership and the implications of Biden’s candidacy.
Buttigieg, speaking to the media, suggested that the Democratic Party might have been better off if Biden had not pursued another term.
“Maybe, you know, right now, with the benefit of hindsight, I think most people would agree that is the case,” he said.
This statement drew immediate criticism from Carville, who argued that such sentiments should have been voiced when they could have influenced the political landscape.
“Well, f**k, say something when it meant something,” Carville noted, emphasizing that hindsight offers little value if it does not lead to action.
The debate intensified following revelations from a new book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson, which suggests that concerns about Biden’s stamina were prevalent among White House officials.
The book details incidents, including Biden’s inability to recognize actor George Clooney at a fundraiser, highlighting growing worries about his fitness for office.
Carville, who previously served as an advisor to former President Bill Clinton, referred to Biden as “one of the better presidents” but lamented that the president sacrificed a “glorious retirement” by choosing to run again.
He described the situation as a potential “tragedy,” echoing the sentiments of many within the party who question the wisdom of Biden’s continued candidacy.
During the podcast, Carville also criticized the broader trend of Democrats publicly expressing doubts about Biden only now.
“All of the people who never said anything, now they’re saying it,” he remarked, pointing to the lack of proactive support for Biden during critical moments of his presidency.
Co-host Al Hunt added to the criticism, urging Biden to consider stepping back from public life, stating, “You are making a fool of yourself.”
Hunt emphasized that Biden’s recent attempts to counter criticisms related to the Tapper book were misguided, suggesting that the president should focus on his personal life and family rather than engaging in what he termed a “foolish” political fight.
The exchange highlights a significant divide within the Democratic Party as it prepares for the upcoming election cycle.
As Biden’s approval ratings waver and concerns over his ability to lead grow, voices like Carville’s may resonate with those who seek a more decisive direction for the party.
With the 2024 election looming, the dynamics within the Democratic Party will likely continue to evolve, shaped by both internal critiques and external pressures.
