Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has reportedly signed a new law banning the addition of fluoride and other medical additives to the state’s public drinking water.

The legislation, known as SB 700, eliminates the authority of local governments to fluoridate water supplies, a move celebrated by supporters of medical freedom and health transparency.

During a news conference in Tallahassee, DeSantis described fluoridation as “forced medication,” emphasizing the importance of informed consent.

He stated, “At the end of the day, we should all agree that people deserve informed consent.” While the law does not completely ban fluoride—allowing residents to purchase fluoridated water from private suppliers—it ensures that the government cannot mandate its inclusion in public water without consent.

State Senator Keith Truenow remarked, “When it gets hot in the Sunshine State, no one clamors for a cold glass of fluoride,” underscoring the desire to protect natural resources and give Floridians the freedom to make their own choices regarding water quality.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson highlighted that the law aims to ensure clean, safe water without unnecessary additives.

This legislation aligns with the “Make America Healthy Again” movement led by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which focuses on consumer choice and skepticism of centralized health mandates.

Critics of the move argue that fluoridation is an effective measure against tooth decay, particularly for children.

However, DeSantis referred to updated guidance from the State Surgeon General, who raised concerns about fluoride’s potential effects on pregnant women and infants.

The law reflects a growing public distrust of medical institutions, especially in the wake of COVID-19.

DeSantis stated that the burden of proof lies on those advocating for mandatory fluoridation, asserting that individuals should have the choice to opt out.
