In a recent phone interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, former President Donald Trump reportedly indicated that he believes he could run for a third term in office and has not dismissed the possibility.
Trump acknowledged the interest from his allies, including Steve Bannon, who have been encouraging him to consider a bid for the presidency again in 2028.
When asked specifically if he had been presented with plans that would enable him to serve a third term, Trump responded cryptically that there are “methods” to achieve this, hinting at possible strategies without elaborating.
He discussed a hypothetical scenario where Vice President JD Vance could win the presidency in 2028 and then subsequently pass the baton to him. Trump confirmed that there are multiple scenarios being considered.
Despite the serious tone of the discussion, Welker pressed him about whether he was joking, to which Trump clarified, “No, no I’m not joking.”
He asserted his enjoyment of working but maintained that it is “far too early” to make definitive plans for a third term.
Prior to his victory in the 2024 election, Trump had previously ruled out the idea of running again in 2028, stating that he did not foresee that happening.
However, his allies are reportedly exploring potential loopholes in the 22nd Amendment, which prohibits any individual from being elected to the presidency more than twice.
Bannon indicated that they are working on finding alternatives that could allow Trump to run again, suggesting that there might be different interpretations of term limits.
As the political landscape evolves, Trump’s ambiguous statements leave the door open for speculation about his future ambitions.
