Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the Florida House’s recent decision to reinstate four budget items he had previously vetoed.
In a video shared on X, DeSantis criticized lawmakers for prioritizing spending while neglecting critical issues facing Floridians, such as condo insurance reform, medical freedom, and E-Verify implementation.
He emphasized the need for relief from the ongoing condo crisis and highlighted that proposed bills aimed at addressing the high assessments for older condo units were stalled in the House.
Furthermore, he noted that a universal E-Verify bill, which would mandate all businesses to check the legal status of potential hires, had also not progressed in either chamber.
The House voted unanimously to override DeSantis’ vetoes, reinstating budget allocations totaling over $4.7 million from a $118.6 billion budget.
The projects included a water treatment initiative in Rockledge, a staffing system for state prisons, a sewer upgrade in Baldwin, and a nonprofit aiding veterans with health benefits.
Despite the relatively small amount compared to his total vetoes of nearly $950 million, DeSantis made it clear he favors prioritizing property tax cuts over such restorations.
House Speaker Daniel Perez defended the decision to cut the state sales tax by 0.75%, proposing that this measure would provide significant relief to Floridians.
However, DeSantis called for a comprehensive tax package focusing on property tax, which he argues is the most pressing financial burden for residents.
As the Florida Senate has not yet decided whether to support the House’s veto overrides, tensions between DeSantis and House leadership reflect differing priorities for the state’s budget and tax strategies.
The ongoing legislative session is expected to shape the fiscal landscape as lawmakers negotiate a final budget plan.
