On the latest episode of HBO’s Real Time, Bill Maher reportedly confronted California Governor Gavin Newsom after Newsom labeled leftist Democrats as “toxic.”
Maher pointed out Newsom’s past involvement in the very policies he now criticizes, asserting that the governor has been a “poster boy” for these issues.
During their discussion, Newsom commended Maher for his willingness to engage with President Donald Trump, emphasizing the need for dialogue to bridge divides.
He expressed concern over the Democratic Party’s declining favorability, which reportedly dropped from 29% to 27% in various polls.
Newsom argued that Democrats need to engage in meaningful conversations rather than remain trapped in their own echo chambers.
Despite praising Newsom and encouraging him to consider a presidential run, Maher challenged him about being associated with ineffective Democratic policies, including regulations in California and his positions on issues affecting transgender youth.
Maher questioned how Newsom could advocate for dialogue when he had previously supported policies that many view as lacking common sense.
In response, Newsom defended a California law that prevents teachers from being fired for not reporting students’ discussions about gender identity.
He clarified that while teachers cannot be coerced into reporting students’ identities, they still have the discretion to inform parents if necessary.
Furthermore, Newsom criticized the culture of “canceling” within the Democratic Party, suggesting that party members need to “mature” and take responsibility for their actions.
He acknowledged the judgmental attitudes prevalent in the party and called for a more open approach to discourse with those holding differing viewpoints.
The exchange highlighted the ongoing internal struggles within the Democratic Party as it seeks to redefine its identity and appeal to a broader audience.
