U-Haul has now released new data from one-way moves at the beginning of the new year, indicating that migration within the United States is significantly geared toward southern states, which are more politically conservative.
In 2024, the states with the highest growth rates, as determined by U-Haul data, were South Carolina, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee.
For the fifth year in a run, California’s leftist government was ranked 50th.
South Carolina, which had been ranked fourth in 2023, reached the top position in 2024.
“State-to-state transactions from the past year reaffirm customer tendencies that have been pronounced for some time. Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families gauge their cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that go into relocating to a new state. Out-migration remains prevalent for a number of markets across the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast — and particularly California.” U-Haul President John Taylor reported.
Texas, which had been at the top for the previous three years and had ranked first or second every year since 2016, was relegated to second place.
Since 2015, Florida has ranked fourth or higher annually.
South Carolina and Texas have consistently supported every Republican presidential candidate since 1976. North Carolina has maintained this trend, with the exception of 2008, when Barack Obama narrowly won by.3%.
Tennessee has supported every Republican presidential candidate since 2000. Florida, which was previously a purple state, has transitioned to a solid red state under GOP Governor Ron DeSantis.
