On Tuesday, President-elect Trump has now reportedly disclosed that he intends to attend the funeral of former President Carter.
Trump responded, “I’ll be there” when asked by a reporter as he entered a New Year’s Eve soiree at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. Trump declined to disclose whether he had communicated with Carter’s relatives.
According to the Carter Center, Carter passed away peacefully on Sunday in Plains, Georgia. In October, he reached the age of 100, becoming the longest-living president in the nation’s history.
On the campaign trail, Trump frequently criticized Carter’s administration, drawing comparisons between the increased inflation rates of the 1970s and the current inflation rate in his criticism of President Biden.
Nevertheless, the former president wrote in a tribute to Carter following his death that the 39th president “did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans.”
Several days of remembrances will culminate in Carter’s funeral, which will be conducted at Washington National Cathedral on January 9. Biden is anticipated to deliver one of the eulogies, as he has previously stated that Carter requested him to do so.
Carter’s remains will travel through his birthplace of Plains before arriving in Atlanta, where they will be laid to rest at the Carter Center for three days.
Afterward, his corpse will be placed in state in the Rotunda of the Capitol for two days before being transported to the cathedral. His final resting place will be in Plains, where he will be interred alongside his late wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter.
Biden stated in his proclamation that flags will be flown at half-staff over all government structures for a period of 30 days following Carter’s passing.
