Earlier this week, a friendly fire accident over the Red Sea resulted in the inadvertent destruction of an F/A-18 Super Hornet.

Shortly after that, a second F/A-18 Super Hornet came dangerously close to being destroyed as well.

According to a statement released by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the two pilots of the plane that was shot down were able to safely evacuate from their aircraft after it was “shot down in an apparent case of friendly fire.”

“The guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64), which is part of the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, mistakenly fired on and hit the F/A-18, which was flying off the USS Harry S. Truman,” the statement revealed.

It was determined that both pilots had been rescued from the Red Sea.

According to the official from the United States Navy, the fighter jet that was shot down was in the process of landing when it was finally brought down by the enemy.

The information provided by the source suggested that fighter pilots were quite upset about the incident and that they questioned the training that was conducted on the USS Gettysburg.
