According to President-elect Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is reportedly unlikely to nominate his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to succeed Sen. Marco Rubio in the Senate.
“No, I don’t. I probably don’t. But I don’t know. Ron’s doing a good job. That’s his choice – nothing to do with me.” Trump said while taking questions from reporters.
Trump announced last month that he would nominate Rubio, a prominent Republican member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees and a three-term senator from Florida, to serve as secretary of state in his upcoming administration.
Since that time, the president-elect and a few of Trump’s closest allies have advocated for Lara Trump, who served as the co-chair of the Republican National Committee from March until a week ago, to assume Rubio’s Senate seat for the subsequent two years.
DeSantis has declared that he will determine the successor for Rubio in the Senate soon.
Trump reportedly informed DeSantis that he would prefer to see his daughter-in-law succeed Rubio.
However, Republican sources in Florida indicate that DeSantis is more inclined to nominate an individual who has previously served in a public office in the Sunshine State.
DeSantis, a former Trump ally who clashed with the former president during a highly contentious 2024 GOP presidential nomination race last year and early this year, mended relations with the former president after the primary season.
He endorsed Trump and contributed to the Republican nominee’s general election campaign.
The formal confirmation process for Rubio by his colleagues senators will not commence until after Trump is sworn into office on Jan. 20.
