Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, is now claiming that Vice President Harris will not be successful in the upcoming contest for governor of California in 2026 if she decides to run for the position of replacing Governor Gavin Newsom.
A number of current and statewide officials have already stated their intention to run for the position of governor, so there is no shortage of potential Democrats to take Newsom’s place.
The position has never been held by a woman.
McCarthy stated that Harris is young enough to have another chapter of her political career, but he pointed out that she has never really done well in long campaigns, referring to her run for president in 2020, when she withdraw from the primary election.
“If she came back to California, she would not win the race for governor. So, I mean, she’s got to rethink.” McCarthy said.
After winning the election for the Senate in 2016, Harris served as the state’s attorney general until she was chosen to be Vice President Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020.
Harris was elected twice as the attorney general of California, in 2010 and 2014.
During the time that Harris is getting ready to take over the vice presidency to Vance, who would be the Vice President-elect, there is a lot of speculation about what she will do next.
Some Democrats have expressed their desire for Harris to run for president once more in 2028, despite the fact that she was defeated by President-elect Trump.
However, some Democrats have predicted that she would choose to run for governor of California, given that Newsom’s tenure is limited.
McCarthy made the argument that if the party had done a traditional primary earlier in the race, it is highly unlikely that Harris would have been the nominee of the party competing against Trump.
McCarthy, who had been removed from his position as Speaker of the House by his fellow Republican colleagues the previous year, resigned from his position in December of last year.
Following his departure from the White House, he suggested that Harris take some time to relax and unwind.
