Governor Ron DeSantis is now reportedly employing his political influence and relying on his celebrity status in order to push against a new proposed amendment that would promote abortion in the sunshine state.
On Tuesday, DeSantis was joined by former Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy at a Catholic school in Pinellas County.
The governor maintains that a few of the 49 words in Amendment 4 leave an excessive amount of room for interpretation.
In the 2024 election, Amendment 4 is a ballot measure that aims to broaden the scope of abortion rights in Florida.
It would effectively invalidate previous laws signed by DeSantis that restrict abortion to the first six weeks of pregnancy if it were to be passed.
DeSantis maintains that the term “viability” is improperly defined, the term “provider” could potentially allow non-physicians to provide medical care, and the state’s “notification” of a parent rule distorts Florida’s rule on parental “consent.”
“If you don’t know what some of the words mean, if you don’t know what this would do, if you don’t have a very firm sense of that, you should vote no.” DeSantis concluded.
