Former President Donald Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, stated on Saturday that if a federal abortion ban were to be enacted by Congress, Trump would veto the measure.
Vance informed moderator Kristen Welker that Trump has explicitly stated that he would veto a ban when asked about GOP legislators such as South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham who would like to see Trump advocate for and pass an abortion ban on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”
The Trump campaign’s most recent stance on abortion policy is indicative of the former president’s evolving stance over the years.
In April, Trump was asked on a tarmac in Atlanta whether he would sign a national abortion ban if it passed through Congress.
His response was a blunt “no.”

However, the former president did not provide a specific definition of what he meant by “ban” at the time.
During his tenure as president in 2018, Trump urged the Senate to enact a 20-week abortion restriction that had already been approved by the House.
He commemorated the Supreme Court’s decision to nullify Roe v. Wade and abolish the constitutional right to abortion last year.
