After his appalling performance in the debate against former President Donald Trump, Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) reportedly became the first Democrat in the U.S. Senate to demand that President Joe Biden resign from office.
Welch confessed that, like millions of Democrats throughout the nation, he is “worried about November’s election” in an opinion piece that was published in The Washington Post.
“We cannot unsee President Biden’s disastrous debate performance. We cannot ignore or dismiss the valid questions raised since that night,” Welch wrote.
After the debate, he observed, “the national conversation is solely focused on Biden’s age and capacity.”
After the debate, polls have showed that Trump’s lead against Biden has widened even further as the president trails nationally, particularly in battleground states.
Welch argued that states like Arizona and Georgia are Democratic “strongholds” while pointing out that many of the states that supported Biden in 2020 are now moving to the Republican side.
“Vice President Harris is a capable, proven leader, and we have other electable, young, energizing Democratic governors and senators in swing states. Not only do these leaders have experience running and winning in tough political environments, they also have fundraising networks, media experience, charisma, and the ability to inspire voters across generations and across our big tent.” Welch added.
“We have asked President Biden to do so much for so many for so long. It has required unmatched selflessness and courage. We need him to put us first, as he has done before. I urge him to do it now.” he concluded.
